Will Fulton of Thrillist was tasked by his company with drinking a gallon of water a day for thirty days. The Water Gallon Challenge as it is known online requires willpower and perseverance to complete.

Will Fulton’s expectations were of clearer skin and more energy, among other things. 60% of the body being composed of water makes hydration a requirement for life. Water assists in digesting food, transporting nutrients throughout the body, and maintaining body temperature.

On day 1

Fulton’s biggest concern is how to focus and actually drink a full gallon of water when his body and mind are not used to the process.

By day 5

Fulton is frequenting the bathroom. As he found out, drinking a gallon of water each day will lead to frequent urination. He claims to have used the bathroom every twenty minutes. This isn’t a problem in itself as long as a nutrient rich diet is maintained. Too much water will filter out toxins but will also remove essential vitamins and minerals that the body needs to function correctly.

The kidneys filter blood and waste in the body. They also transport urine to the bladder. For obvious reasons water assists with kidney function resulting in clear, healthy urine; which is a sign of good hydration. The darker the urine the more the body is dehydrated. More water also adds fluid to the colon leading to healthier digestion and bowel movements.

On day 10

Fulton wakes up with more energy and a refreshing attitude. His self-image has also improved which never hurt anyone.

He was told that he appeared happier during the challenge. Dehydration has been shown to lead to negative changes in mood. Hydration will boost that mood into happier territory.

On day 15

Fulton has plenty of energy without needing coffee to keep him going. He is sleeping better and his body temperature is more comfortable.

Staying hydrated fights fatigue. Dehydration and tiredness go hand in hand. More water and more energy will help with exercise and diet. Water intake will increase the body’s metabolism. No diet is complete without water. It also helps the body feel full which will help with avoiding unnecessary calories. Staying in shape requires water.

On day 25

Fulton feels like an all-around better person. He is told his skin is clearer and his whole body feels better.

and all is well. Fulton doesn’t recommend the Water Gallon Challenge to everyone but does insist that he was not drinking enough water before he took on this challenge.

There is a negative side to too much water. Drinking too much water in a short amount of time can cause sodium levels in the blood to drop too low. Hyponatremia, also known as water intoxication, can be dangerous and even fatal.

The Water Gallon Challenge should be done with thought and care. A gallon of water should be ingested throughout the day and not in one sitting.

Easy ways to increase daily water intake include: eating more fresh fruits and veggies which are high in water content, keeping a bottle of water around at all times, and drinking beverages that taste good so it doesn’t become a chore to be hydrated.

Fulton and doctors agree that more water will lead to a healthier body and a happier mind. It is not necessary to drink a gallon of water a day. Depending on age and body weight it is recommended to drink about two liters of water daily to stay hydrated.
