Have you and your partner been fighting a lot lately? Are you and your partner unsure of where your future should go? If you answered yes to either of these questions, one or both of you may be thinking about temporarily separating, at least until you both can figure out what the next step in your relationship should be. Depending on the situation, separating can be a good thing or it can be a bad thing. Here are some of the pros and cons of temporary separation from your partner.
Pros of Temporary Separation:
Can Help You Realize You Love Your Partner
Absence can make the heart grow fonder. If you are your love one separate, you will get to experience day-to-day life without the other one. If you two are truly in love, you will both miss each other and gravitate back to each other. Sometimes it simply takes being away from the person to make you realize how much they really do mean to you.
Gives You Space to Work Your Issues Out
If you and your partner are fighting a lot, there can be a lot of tension when you two are together. Separating can allow you both the opportunity to cool down and think, without having that tension around. This can allow you to work your issues out and move forward together.
Allows You to Test the Waters With Other People
If you haven’t been in many relationships, you may be unsure if the person you are with now is really “the one.” It’s sort of like shoes. Sometimes you have to try on a few pairs to make sure you really love the pair you think you do. If you and your partner separate, you can test the water with other people and find out if you really do love your partner or learn whether there is something better out there for you. Many people find that the grass usually isn’t greener on the other side, so odds are, your partner may get confirmation they do love you after experiencing other people.

Cons of Temporary Separation:
It Can Be Hard to Temporarily Separate
One of the biggest downsides to temporarily separating is that it can be challenging. If you live together and have your lives intertwined, one of you has to temporarily find somewhere else to live and move out belongings, only for a temporary period of time. It’s a lot of work for something that may be short-lived, and as such, many people don’t do it.
One or Both of You May Like Your Freedom
The other huge con to temporarily separating is that one or both of you may like the freedom or realize how free you feel without each other. This can lead to the end of the relationship. It can be particularly hard if one of you misses your partner and one of your feels free, but unfortunately, you won’t know how you feel until you separate. Just be aware that one or both of you may want to end the relationship after separating.
There is an old saying that says, “If you love something, set it free. If it comes back, it’s yours. If it doesn’t, it never was.” If you and your partner are unsure of what direction to take your relationship in, separating can help you figure it out. Unfortunately, sometimes you will find that you and your partner are in love and should stay together and other times you will learn that it is time to let go of the relationship
