Baking soda is a product that should be in every household. There are many ways you can use this product. You can unclog a toilet with it, using it to clean countertops, and can even be used to prevent blistering should you get sunburned. However, while it has many different uses, there are times where this product should be avoided. Here are five times when it can be dangerous to use baking soda.

Brushing Your Teeth
Mixing water and baking soda and forming a paste that sits on teeth can help to whiten teeth. But, some people think that brushing with the powder will also help whiten. Regularly brushing with baking soda can hurt enamel because undiluted baking soda is abrasive. While we all want to have that smile that lights up a room, you shouldn’t do it at the risk of damaging your enamel. Once the enamel is gone, you cannot get it back.

On Your Face
Baking soda is said to help get rid of acne. As such, some people make washes and masks with it. While it can help to neutralize the skin, if your skin is sensitive, it can also dry it out and cause redness, itchiness, and a burning sensation. If you have sensitive skin, you should avoid it.

Washing Your Hair
Baking soda can irritate your scalp, damage the hair cuticle, and it won’t remove the oil that builds up on the scalp. Baking soda is too alkaline and harsh to use on hair. If you are looking for a natural hair cleaning product, don’t try baking soda.

Cleaning Stone Countertops
When mixed with water, baking soda can be used to clean laminate, wood and tile countertops. However, it should not be used to clean stone countertops. Baking soda is abrasive and can scratch granite, marble or quartz. It is also alkaline, which can cause discoloration.

Douching
Baking soda can burn or irritate an infection that may be present. Douching isn’t recommended anyhow, but adding baking soda to your mixture can cause more problems and it may make matters worse for you. If you must douche, stick to water.

There are many wonderful things you can do with baking soda. You can remove stains from your carpet with it, scrub stuck on food off your stove with it, and take the sting out of a bug bite with it. However, it isn’t ideal for every situation. There are some uses online that shouldn’t be used, as they can be damaging. Using baking soda to brush your teeth, get rid of acne on your face, wash your hair, clean a stone countertop or douche with is not recommended.
