The Best Pet Treats

Pet treats are available in various sizes, shapes, and flavors so it can be difficult to decide which to choose, and which are healthy options or junk food. You may be particular about the health of your dog but treating them once in a while with a food of their choice can be a good idea.

Before you decide which foods should be given to your pet read all the ingredients. Treats loaded with grains and by-products are likely the equivalent of feeding your pet a candy bar, but that’s fine once in a while, not on a regular basis. Treats that contain natural ingredients and contain mostly meat are the healthiest option for your pet whereas grain should be avoided as much as possible. Meat is their natural diet, a meat-based diet is the healthiest. Commercial treats are available in market and some companies make great soft jerky treats that can be broken into small pieces for training purposes. Scraps of quality grade meat can be fed to dogs. Cooked or dried meat can be cut into small pieces and served to your dog and he will surely love it. Dairy products, especially cheese, should be avoided as they are high in fat and dairy is not a natural food for dogs once they are weaned.

Keeping in mind the above points, the following recipe will make your dog’s tail wag as they should love its taste and it’s healthy.

Gourmet Dog Biscuits

Any type of meat broth can be used in this recipe, if you do not have broth on hand use water.

Ingredients:

• All-purpose flour – 3 cups
• Whole wheat flour – 3 cups
• Cracked wheat – 2 cups
• Cornmeal – 1 cup
• Garlic powder – 1 tablespoon
• Brewer’s yeast – 1 tablespoon
• Dry milk powder – ½ cup
• Beef broth – 3 cups
• Milk – 1/8 cup

Directions

• Preheat oven to 300 degrees (150 degrees C). Grease a cookie sheet.

• Combine both flours, cornmeal, cracked wheat, garlic powder, yeast, and instant milk in a large mixing bowl, stir in two cups of broth. Use a heavy-duty electric mixer to mix the ingredients well, you can also do this using your hands until dough is stiff. Make a bread-dough consistency by adding the remaining cup of broth.

• Roll dough on a floured board maintaining a thickness of ¼ – ½ inch. Cut out biscuits in a shape you think your dog will like and place on the prepared cookie sheet. Brush the tops with milk.

• Bake 45 minutes and let biscuits sit overnight then store in an airtight container.
