Reiki Healing Energy for the Mind, Body and Spirit

By Dawn Parente, NC, HHP

Reiki is a holistic system for balancing, healing, and harmonizing all aspect of the person – mind, body, emotions, and spirit. Reiki (pronounced Ray Key) is also know as “Universal Life- force Energy”, or “Spiritual Energy”.

Reiki originated in Japan with a Dr. Mikao Usui who passed on the healing modality to a naval commander named Dr. Chujiro Hayashi. The story is told that after Dr. Usui’s death in 1926 Dr. Hayashi opened a clinic. Hawayo Takata, a women from Hawaii visited the clinic in Japan while visiting relatives. She was so impressed with the success of her treatments that she asked for the knowledge to be passed down to her so she could share it with others, and it was passed down. She returned to Hawaii after her schooling and opened her own clinic in the United States in 1937.

Reiki is a safe, gentle, nonintrusive hands-on-healing technique, which uses spiritual energy to treat physical ailments without using pressure, manipulation or massage. Reiki is a complimentary technique that will enhance any medical treatment. Reiki works in conjunction with traditional and non-traditional modalities.

The benefits of Reiki are:

• Supports the body’s innate ability to heal itself
• Helps to reduce stress levels
• Promotes relaxation
• Relieves tension
• Helps with focus
• Reduces fatigue
• Balances and aligns your energy field
• Promotes inner peace
• Balances on an emotional and mental level

A full Reiki treatment is usually one full hour. The client remains fully dressed, except for shoes lying supine, comfortably on a treatment table. The practitioner/healer gently places their hands on the body in specific places for a few minutes. There is no pressure, massage, or manipulation applied. Reiki can also be applied with the client in a sitting position this is usually done during a shorter treatment session. Client responses will vary with each individual. Some will feel heat or tingling as the Reiki energy flows through them, or certain parts may feel cold, especially after the practitioner removes their hands. Usually the client feels very relaxed and at peace as the energy is flowing through. Some may even drift off into sleep, or an altered state of mind. However, some clients will experience some emotional upset as the Reiki energy begins to break down old patterns and blockages and bringing them to the surface to be healed and released. The persons experience with the treatments may be different at different times. The beauty of this is, whatever the person experiences is perfect for them and what they need at the time of the treatment.

The word Reiki is divided into two parts.
Rei – is translated as the “wisdom and knowledge of all the universe” – meaning – the wisdom that comes from God (or the source, the creator, the universe or All that is or what ever your belief is).
Ki – is the life force energy that flows through every living thing – plants, animals and people – even in rocks and inanimate objects.

We all talk about energy in different ways, such as wind power, coal, electricity or the calorie of food (measurement of energy), but the definition of energy is much broader. Einstein and later quantum physics have explained that at an atomic level everything that exists in the universe is energy, vibrating and oscillating at different rates; that physical matter and energy are just two forms of the same thing. We are energetic beings. All life forms have an energy vibration.

We can see and feel what we know as the physical body. Inside your body, every cell is energy and is vibrating at a slow enough rate to make it into a visible physical matter. At the same time another body energy is completely surrounding our physical body. This energy is made up of a lighter (higher) vibration and is commonly called the aura and is non-visible to most people. The aura is energy of a spiritual nature. You may notice energy differences when around different people as positive or negative. Have you ever felt drawn to sit next to someone? Have you ever felt a sense of discomfort when sitting with someone? Have you ever walked into a room and felt uncomfortable from the heaviness? These senses are picked up by your aura.

The Chakras are an essential part of our body’s energy system. The chakras are intrinsically connected to our physical health. Each is linked to specific parts of the body and to body systems. Chakra is a Sanskrit word, meaning wheel or vortex. We have thousands of chakras, but there are seven major chakras in the human body from the base of the spine to the crown of the head.

Reiki healing treatments work with opening and balancing the chakra system. When a particular chakra is healthy, balance, and open, so too are its connected body parts. Conversely, if a chakra is blocked, damaged or closed, then the health of the connected body part and system will be compromised.

The Meridians are the final component of the human energy body. They are the energy equivalent to the arteries and veins that carry out blood around our body. It is on these meridians that the various points exist that are used in complimentary therapies such as acupuncture and reflexology.

The state of the energy body is very important in the health of any individual. Any blockages in the auric field and or chakras that are not healed will manifest in the physical body as ‘dis-ease.’
