The Dangers of Ignoring a Toothache

The Dangers of Ignoring a Toothache

Among all the aspects of proper hygiene, dental care is one of the most overlooked part. A toothache is a condition that’s commonly viewed as a nothing more than a temporary nuisance. And while it’s true that nobody’s ever died of ignoring a toothache, the dangers that lie beneath are incredibly insidious, and worth early intervention.

What is a Toothache?

Well, the obvious and simple answer is that toothache is a pain that’s felt around an affected tooth. Its causes are many, and a lot of these cases pose a significant threat to you if left unchecked.

As with all pain indicators in the body, a toothache is a signal that there’s something amiss. And, in a similar fashion, if you ignore these signals, something nasty could come back to bite you when you least want it to.

So, these are the things that you need to look out for if you’re experiencing a toothache that lasts for more than a day.

Tooth Decay

When we eat food, the residue become plaque, a sticky bacteria that clings to your teeth and produces an acid that has been proven to destroy tooth enamel (the hard outer covering of your teeth). When left uncleaned for significant periods of time, the enamel will eventually break, thus presenting a mode of ingress for bacteria to enter your body. This will often lead to an infection or the tooth and gums.

Infection

This is defined as an instance when a pathogen is able to enter your body. The most common method of ingress is through a break in your skin. So, with that in mind, a whole lot of bad things could stem from an infected tooth as infections do tend to spread. It’s possible for a tooth infection to spread to your blood and lungs as is with what happened to this person.

Tooth Abscesses

If left untreated for too long, an infection is going to cause the surrounding area to swell. Pus is at the root of this swelling, and yes, gasp, you should. Cringe, you should. But not simply because of the thought of pus building up in your mouth, but because of the fact that the infection can spread directly to the brain, where it can cause irreversible damage or worse, death.

So, how exactly can you prevent these things from ever happening? Well. It’s rather simple. Get your teeth checked regularly by a dentist.

But if you currently have a toothache that’s lasted for more than a day, it’s best to consult one of the emergency dentists on Sunday dentist in order to get you sorted right away.

A toothache is no laughing matter and it shouldn’t be taken lightly. As you already know, it can be a dangerous thing to ignore. But what you don’t know is how often people actually die from toothache-related causes. These are but a few of them. So, remember to always keep your dental hygiene in check.

Because you never know. It’s the smallest things that potentially topple empires.
