Marriage can be hard. Stress can make people forget why the ever got married in the first place. It’s important to make sure that never happens by taking some time to remind your spouse that you care and to build up their self-esteem and sense of self-worth. It doesn’t take much to remind them that you care as long as you take the time and effort to do it in the first place.

Start the Day Off Right

Your first interaction in the morning will set the tone for the rest of the day. Start it off with a compliment, or simply by wishing your spouse a good morning. It will start the day on a pleasant note and remind them that you care.

Learn to Listen

Few things make a person feel as good as being listened to. Listening is a skill, and learning it can pay dividends. Ask for clarification if you need it, but don’t offer advice unless your spouse seems to want it. Try to avoid distractions or multitasking while you listen to make sure that you understand everything.

Ask for Input

Asking a person for input is a sign that you value them. Asking for help with an easy task seems lazy and patronizing, but asking for help with something that your spouse is good at and your are not will make them feel important and trusted.

Offer, Don’t Insist

You should always offer to help your spouse if they look like they need it, but never insist on helping them if they refuse. Pressing the issue will make your spouse feel incompetent and dependent, which can lead to resentment over long periods of time. Always remember that there are times when people want to do things own their own, even if it’s hard to manage.

Argue About Ideas, Not Each Other

Conflict is natural in a relationship, but it can cause a lot of stress and resentment. The best way to resolve conflict without anger is to discuss the merits of ideas and plans without making them personal. Don’t bring up your spouse’s past actions or mistakes. Keep the discussion focuses on whatever issue needs to be resolved and don’t move the discussion over to the people who are arguing.

Spend Time Together

Nothing in this world is more valuable than time. Rich or poor, you only have so much of it and you cannot get more. Spending your precious time with another person shows that you value their company over all of the other things that you could be doing. Spending time together is the key to building up a strong relationship in the first place, but also the key to maintaining that relationship over the years. Never take your spouse for granted and always cherish the time that you can spend together. Your spouse will notice and feel valued.

Give Your Spouse a Surprise

Surprising your spouse with something that they love shows that you not only took the time to do something nice, but also to tailor it to their preferences. It shows that you know your spouse and want to make them happy. Don’t do it so often that it seems like you’re trying to impress them, but do it often enough that they never forget how you feel. The surprise could be a little thing like bringing home flowers, or something as elaborate as breakfast in bed. The scale doesn’t matter much as long as you do something nice without being asked.

A relationship can only survive when both people feel like they are important and valued partners in it. Taking the time to remind your partner that you care about them is the best way to make sure that they never forget why they married you in the first place and to keep that marriage strong for the rest of your lives.
