If you’ve ever had a urinary tract infection (UTI), you know never want to again. If you’ve never had one, you do NOT want to get one. One of the most common ways of getting a UTI is also one of human kind’s most common activities: making love. But you can avoid all that by simply urinating afterward.

Importance Of Urinating

You know you have a UTI when your urethra burns and throbs when you pee, and the feeling that you have to pee does not go away. Your urine may be cloudy or even contain blood. You may have lower back or side pain, or even fever and chills.

Why should you avoid getting UTIs?

UTIs are usually treatable, but you can and should try to not to get them. UTI pain is terrible. The consequences can go beyond pain. Untreated or recurring UTIs can cause kidney and bladder damage. They can also lead to septicemia, which is an infection of the bloodstream. They can be hard to treat and may be disabling or even deadly.

The treatment for UTIs has its own problems. Antibiotics give many people stomach problems, like nausea and diarrhea. They can cause yeast infections in women. Taking antibiotics can lead to resistance even when they’re used correctly.

What Cause UTIs?

The culprit is usually E. coli. This bacteria is one of the common causes of food recalls. E. coli naturally lives in your gastrointestinal tract. The bacteria from the end or your GI tract (your butt) don’t have far to do to get into your urinary tract. One way that the bacteria travel that short distance is if you wipe from back to front after using the toilet. From there, they can enter your bladder and kidneys, and even your bloodstream.

The fact is it is close to impossible to have friendly relations without transferring bacteria from where it is to where it shouldn’t be. So, no matter how much you want to cuddle or fall asleep after the fun, get up and pee first. This flushes bacteria from your urinary tract. It doesn’t matter if you don’t feel like you have to pee. Do it.

If you get a UTI

Go to the doctor ASAP. Walk-in clinics are a great choice. They can see you much faster than the hospital ER. The doctor will run a quick test on your pee to make sure it contains bacteria. Then you’ll be given antibiotics. Take them according to the directions and finish the bottle!

How to avoid UTIs

  • Pee after making love, or any !ntimate contact.
  • Wash your hands and private areas with soap and water before touching your partner.
  • Change your condoms or dental dams when switching from back to front action.
  • Don’t hold it in when you have to pee.
  • Wipe front to back – not back to front – after you use the toilet.
  • Wash yourself and your partner with soap and water when switching from back to front action. Or just keep it to either a front or back action if you don’t want to take a clean-up break.
  • Stay hydrated.

Be kind to yourself and pee. It’s one of the simplest, but most important, things you can do for your health.
