Here’s What Really Causing Your Recurring Acne That Appear at The Same Spot

You finally got rid of that stubborn blemish only for it to come back in the exact same spot, right? If this describes your experience with recurring acne, you’re not only. Fortunately, though, there are a few things you can do to get rid of that acne issue that keeps surfacing in the same location, according to Joshua Zeichner, M.D., the director of cosmetic and clinical research in dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York. If you’re struggling with stubborn acne that keeps coming back in the same spot, here is what you need to know about getting rid of it for good.

Acne

A Cyst Might Be to Blame

If you recurring acne is a blemish that never fully comes to a head, the issue is probably a condition known as cystic acne. This type of acne is well-known for coming back in the same spot over and over again. Cystic acne develops when your pore, spreads out and causes oil to take an alternative route from making it to the surface of your skin. As this occurs, the oil forms a pool or “balloon-like” shape that inflates and deflates as you produce more or less oil.

Unfortunately, this is one of the tougher forms of acne to treat. Cystic acne actually changes the actual structure of your skin, so there is no way for you to remove it on your own. You can either choose to wait it out or see a dermatologist who will even give you a cortisone shot or a prescription medication to heal the issue from the inside out.

A Whitehead Gone Rogue Could Be the Cause

It’s so tempting to pop a whitehead, but you could be doing more harm than good when you do. If you squeeze a whitehead until it bursts, it may still leave behind a partial blockage. And, that blockage that hasn’t been removed could cause another pimple to form.

To prevent the pore from getting blocked again, try using a salicylic acid treatment to remove any excess oil and clear the pore. Or, you can try a spot treatment or product that contains benzoyl peroxide to kill bacteria under the skin to prevent a flare-up.

You Bad Habits Might Be the Culprit

If you find yourself touching your face when you’re stressed or reading, you could be causing your recurring acne. Touching your face in the same area repetitively can actually push dirt and oil into your pores and lead to pimples.

So, to avoid this issue, keep your hands off of your face! And, consider using salicylic acid-based products or benzoyl peroxide treatments to kill any bacteria that may be left behind from your hands and fingers.

It Could Just Be “That Time of the Month”

If you think you’ve noticed a correlation between your period and your breakouts, you aren’t just imagining things. In fact, most women break out in the lower one-third of their faces or from the nose down during that time of the month. There is no real explanation for the correlation at this point, but it may be that the glands in this part of your skin are just more sensitive to hormones although it is also common for women to have flare-ups in other locations, too, such as on the neck or forehead.

While you can’t eradicate period-related acne altogether, you can take a few steps to minimize it. Begin using a salicylic acid cleanser the week prior to your period to eliminate any excess oil your skin may be producing when your body experiences a surge of hormones. And, keep your hands away from your face.

If you thought you were crazy noticing acne in the same spot over and over, you’re not. There are several factors that do cause acne to occur in the same location. But, knowing what those factors are as well as how to treat them will help you get rid of your acne issue for good.
