Auricular acupuncture is a treatment of specific points in and on the ear based on the recognition that the ear represents a microsystem of the human body. It has been proven that it is an efficient method of treating a wide variety of conditions. In the 1950s, Dr. Paul Nogier, a French neurologist, discovered that the ear is like a map that reveals the form of an inverted fetus, representing all anatomical, physiological and emotional aspects of the body. For example, the treatment of sciatic pain is very effective when stimulating the respective anatomically correlating point of the inverted fetus in the ear.
Terry Oleson PhD, an American physician later published the results of his own research into ear acupuncture. He found that by simply examining the patient’s ear for areas of elevated skin conductivity or tenderness, one could diagnose the patient’s medical condition with up to 75% accuracy.
This treatment system functions to normalize the body’s dysfunction through stimulation of definite points on the ear. It is a technique very similar to reflexology, where the stimulation of a reflex point relieves and regulates disharmony of different parts of the body and aspects of mind. Auricular acupuncture is popularly applied in two ways – by means of very thin and short acupuncture needles or by manual pressure using ear pellets, which is also referred to as auricular acupressure.

A well-researched and popularly treated auricular acupuncture point is the Shen Men, or “heavenly gate” point, located in the apex of the triangular fossa of the ear. This point is known for its great effectiveness in the treatment of a vast range of physical and mental conditions, including stress-, pain-, fear-, and inflammation reduction. Its stimulation functions also to alleviate excessive sensitivity, depression and insomnia, as well as analgesia for surgery. Stimulating or treating the Shen Men helps and brings alleviation in any type of emergency. It de-stresses and gives immediate calm. Additionally, this important point is included as one of the main points for the treatment to detoxify the system from drugs and substance abuse.
In auriculotherapy, when stimulating a particular point by means of pressure through a tiny pellet, usually a small Vaccaria seed, the health practitioner traditionally uses a small piece of medical tape to stick a singular pellet onto that point. During the therapy session, the practitioner teaches the patient to gently apply pressure in this way and encourages him or her to continue this application for a few seconds at home a number of times a day. In this way, the patient can then treat themselves and experience hugely positive results, alleviating and overcoming a wide spectrum of physical and mental complaints, simply by applying gentle pressure or stimulation to one single yet powerfully influential auricular acupuncture point. These ear seeds may be left in their position for a number of days for continued usage before being replaced or removed.
